Full Description

{1} Manor house. Mid C17 to C20. Squared coursed lias and brick, some chequer patterned; with a slate roof. Originally probably E-plan now indeterminate. Entrance front of 5-window range. The 2 bays to the far left are C17, lias, with the centre breaking forward, originally as a porch, 6-light stone mullion window with transom to ground floor left and 2 three-light stone mullion windows to first floor. Ashlar gable parapets and kneelers. 3 window range to right is probably late C18, chequered brickwork, with 6-light C19 stone mullion window to far right, centre C20 door with C19 moulded stone surround and hood. C19 dormers to first floor. Tall brick stacks at ridge and end. Interior remodelled early C20. The original C17 and C18 house was partially remodelled in 1893 and reduced in size in the 1950's.

{3} The Manor House had a rear wing, erected in 1893 in the Arts and Crafts style, and demolished in c.1956. Investigation located a cellar beneath this wing. The cellar was filled with ceramic building rubble from the previous extension. The cellar was divided into two halves. No obvious means of original access to the cellar was found. In addition a pipe duct, part of the original heating system, was recovered. Notes on architectural style of building.

{4} A rectangular cellar was revealed to the rear of The Manor. The style of architecture identified in the cellar contrasts with much of the surviving building, where to a large extent the later Victorian alterations were kept in line with the style of earlier building. The cellar also contrasts with the building above, the latter being interpreted as part of the arts and crafts style. The cellar contains segmental arches, not observed eslewhere within the building, nor as far as can be seen in the demolished building. The cellar was probably an Edwardian boiler room.
The main building probably dates to the C17th, with C18th alterations, and again in the late Victorian period c.1893. In the first decade of the C20th a further phase was added, including the cellar, the north wing above and a room on the northwest end of the main range.

{5} The house has a stone front and elsewhere it is mainly brick. It is not outstanding.
