Full Description

{1} Farmhouse. Late C18. Brick with C20 concrete tile roof. 3-unit plan. 2 storeys, 4-window range of sashes with glazing bars under gauged brick arches. C19 porch to left of centre is flanked by two C19 canted brick bays. Gambrel roof with brick stacks at ridge and end. Left gable is slate hung and has partially legible C18 datestone. C19 extension to right. Interior not inspected.

{3} It was presumably built shortly after 1767 when the medieval open fields of Arthingworth were enclosed by Act of Parliament (RCHME 1981, Arthingworth (6)). A datestone on the western gable is now illegible but there is a date of 1769 scratched into a yard wall on the east side of the house. The farmhouse is a typical late C18th post-Inclosure building.

{4} Undated photo;

{5} In 1817 it was called Biggs Lodge and in 1835 it was known as Simons Lodge. The present drive from the south-east did not then exist and access was from the north-east and southwest. By 1864 the modern drive was in place.
