Full Description

{1} Shop with offices above. Possibly late medieval with C17 and C19 alterations. Timber-framed upper storey, ground floor probably of stone. Corrugated asbestos roof. 2 storeys; 3-window range. C20 shop front to left, carriage arch to right with flat buttresses left and right within carriageway. 16-pane sash windows to first floor to left, a C20 casement to right. Access to first floor to rear by C20 coursed stairway. Interior: first floor has close-studded walls, stone fireplace with 4-centred arched head against gable wall of No.8 (q.v.), a blocked 1-light window with pointed arched timber head at far end, and 3-bay roof with arch braced tie beam trusses with crown post, collar, king post, side struts and wind braced purlins.

{3} The surviving first-floor of this three-bay timber-framed building was recorded in June 1981 when it was being refurbished for office accommodation. The plan and front elevation as well as the gable walls and internal trusses were all recorded; the back wall had not survived and any timber at ground floor level had been removed or was concealed. From the evidence of the timber frame, a construction date around 1500 is proposed, and it is further suggested that the building might have been the Town House for Weedon, mentioned in the Churchwarden's accounts in the 1630s.

{4} Plan suggests that this building was the former public house called The Shoulder of Mutton.
