Building record 1933/2/3 - Walls of Former Kitchen Garden c.50m North, South & East of The Museum Tower, Finedon Hall

Formerly the walls of the kitchen garden of Finedon Hall. Parts may be 18th century, but mainly of a mid 19th century date for Mackworth-Dolben.

{1} Walls. Parts may be C18, mainly mid C19 for William Mackworth-Dolben. Squared coursed ironstone with 2 and 3 stage buttresses and part castellated parapets. 2 small and one large arched openings to north range abutting Mackworth Drive. Central arched opening with gabled finials to south range. Fragments of reused carved masonry in north range. Originally kitchen garden walls to Finedon Hall (q.v.).

{4} In the 1912 sale catalogue, the kitchen garden was described as a 'huge, high-walled, L-shaped kitchen garden completely surrounding the courtyards on their northern and eastern sides'. One of the lengths of wall closest to the hall is castellated.
