Building record 3884/0/125 - 5 Cambridge Street

A mid-18th century house, now shop, constructed from squared coursed ironstone with plain-tile roof.

{1} House, now shop. Mid C18. Squared coursed ironstone with plain-tile roof. Originally 2-unit plan. 2 storeys with attic. 3-window range, centre now blocked, of tripartite sashes with glazing bars. 2 windows to left have flat arch heads with keystones. C20 shop front at ground floor. Moulded stone cornice and gable parapet to left. One flat-topped roof dormer.

{3} Rapid building survey undertaken in 2014. Based on architectural detailing, largely of the tripartite sashes, the building was constructed somewhere between 1738 and 1774. There is little of architectural significance internally apart from the attic, where the original wooden rafters survive and there is a central screen dividing the attic into two parts. This comprises a series of vertical beams with some horizontal support and there is no infill, although this has probably been removed, as the presence of a doorway connecting the two parts suggests this was once a solid wall.
