Full Description

{1} Bank. Mid C19. Limestone and granite ashlar with slate roof. Ground floor banking hall. 3 storeys; 5-window range of sashes to first and second floor. Ground floor has 3 large windows, centre partly blocked: flanked to left and right by C19 panelled doors. All ground floor openings have large granite pilasters between with chamfered and moulded surrounds with foliated capitals and roundels above. First and second floor bash windows have moulded stone heads; those at first floor have decorated panels above linked by a moulded stone string course. Moulded stone cornices, rendered parapet above. Stacks not visible. Interior: banking hall has large moulded ceiling beams.

{3} Plans of bank prior to development in 2000.

{4} The interior of the building has been substantially modernised, particularly on the ground floor where only the ceiling beams survive from the original layout. The first floor of the building has an elaborately carved and decorated plaster ceiling. The ceiling can be seen across the entire length of the first floor although the area is now subdivided. The area was probably originally used for either the bank manager or as a boardroom.

{6} Lloyds Bank, Market Street
Mid 19th century neo-classical design. Retains much of the integrity of the building to the exterior. Film 1, photo 11. (1)
