Summary

Medieval wayside cross on the western side of a footpath adjacent to the Grendon to Woolaston Road, on the outskirts of Grendon village. The cross includes a base in the from of a socket stone with chamfered corners. A proportion of the shaft, alos of ironstone is mortared into the socket. The full height of the cross remains is approximately 0.63 metres. The cross is Scheduled and Listed Grade II.

Full Description

{1} (Marginal) In the part of Grendon known as Nether End, ('Lower End' at SP 882610), at the side of the road almost in the hedge row, lies the socket of an ancient cross. A second socket lies in the adjoining field; both stones are rude, and of no architectural importance.

{2} A 'wayside cross'; part of the shaft is still extant. Photos included with OS records. The date of the cross is uncertain.

{3} Wayside cross. Probably C14th/C15th. Limestone ashlar. Square chamfered socket with short square shaft.

{7} The "stone" of authy {6} is actually a wayside cross base with a portion of the shaft still extant - see photograph, this is probably the "socket" ref.d to by authy {1}-the reported "second socket" was not found.
