Building record 3642/0/5 - Orlingbury Dovecote

Formerly listed as Dovecote west of Home Farm, Rectory Lane. This square dovecote is constructed of a mixture of limestone and ferruginous stone, the roof is tiled and a slte hung glover projects through it. The building is orientated east-west and has a small entrance door on the east side. The present structure appears to be a rebuilding of an earlier square dovecote on the site.The structural evidence suggests that it is 18th century in date.

{1} Dovecote. Probably mid C17. Regular coursed limestone with ironstone dressings and plain-tile roof. Rectangular one-unit plan. Small door in north gable under wood lintel. 2-light casement under wood lintel to west elevation. Ashlar gable parapets and kneelers. Slate hung glover with pyramid roof. Interior not inspected.

{9} A watching brief during work to lay a gravel path around the dovecote revealed a 19th century brick floor that was thought to be associated with the toilets. No other archaeological remains were encountered.
