Full Description

{1} Outworkers shop, now outbuilding. Late C19. Brick with slate roof. Probably 2-unit plan. 2 storeys. 3-window range of 2-light casements under wood lintels. Plank door to left also under wood lintel. No stacks. Interior not inspected. Originally used by boot and shoe outworkers. Included for group value.

{3}Outworkers shop, late 19th century. Probably 2-unit plan. 2 storeys. 3-window range. Originally used by boot and shoe outworkers. Included for group value. Now an outbuilding.

{4}The other buildings associated with the boot and shoe factories were the workshops to the rear of many of the properties built during the height of expansion . A good number of these are still standing. In the main they are of red brick, although some stone examples have been identified, and are of single storey construction with a door, window and often a chimney. A group of two storey redbrick workshops are present behind a row of stone cottages in London Road and are Grade II listed buildings.

{6} The building file records three two-storey boot and shoe workshops, constructed circa 1880. Two blocks contain three workshops and one contains two. Each has an entrance, ground floor window and large first floor window. Those on the gable ends are heated.

{7} NB: The listings for the three buildings combined appear to indicate that there are two blocks of two-unit workshops and one block with three workshops.
