Full Description

{2}{5} The Buckingham branch of the Grand Junction Canal opened in 1801. It left the main line of the canal in a south westerly direction. It was disused for commercial traffic to Buckingham by 1910 but continued in use as far as Deanshanger until 1938. The whole branch was abandoned in 1961 although the first 200 yds is still in water for boat moorings. The unwatered course can be followed up to the A5, north east of Old Stratford.

{7} The former course of the Grand Union Canal has been clearly detected as a curving line of magnetic disturbance running through the south-eastern part of the survey area during magnetometry survey. This anomaly incorporates many large, discrete magnetic dipoles which will represent pieces of scrap metal or substantial masses of brickwork dumped during the infilling and levelling of the canal in the late 1960s or early 1970s.

{8} Archaeological monitoring of development to the rear of High Street, Deanshanger identified a terrace which may have been the remains of a wharf on the canal.

{9} The Buckingham Arm was abandoned in 1964 and after this much of the associated infrastructure was demolished.
