Full Description

{1} The Banbury Heavy Anti-Aircraft Battery is partly within the county of Northamptonshire. The HAA battery is important as it is only one of three located in Northamptonshire. Corby and Daventry also had sites but these no longer exist. The HAA site is one of the sites which were built between 1940 and 1942 in order to expand the number of static sites for 3.7 in guns which were expected to arrive in increasing numbers.

{3} During WW2 Banbury was defended by anti-aircraft guns. The Banbury Gun Defended Area (GDA) comprised 4 heavy anti-aircraft gun sites (HAA) located around the town. The two sites in Northamptonshire are those at H1 Hanwell, located in Chacombe parish and some 6.5km to the SE in Kings Sutton, gun site H2 Astrop.
