Full Description

{1} In 1571 there were four named inns in Newland: the Bell, the Crown, the Hart and the Wheatsheaf. No named inns were located elsewhere, an indication perhaps of the importance of the north-south route through the town. Daventry had evidently become known for its inns and alehouses by the time of Shakespeare, who mentioned a local ‘red-nosed innkeeper’ reference.
