Full Description

{1} Evaluation carried out by the Cotswold Archaeological Trust; a post medieval leat associated with Towcester Mill; it forms the current boundary between the town and the meadow.

{2} At least two phases of dumping were noted alongside the mill leat. More discussion on p.27.

{4} Mill leat feeding Church Mill.

{5} The creation of the mill leat is not firmly dated. Bridges states that it was "cut within these hundred years" and a late 17th or 18th century date has been assumed. It is probable that is reuses the Civil War defensive ditch (727/10/1) for some of its course. The old Northampton Road was shifted away from its course across the water meadows and Easton neston as part of the Turnpiking of 1794/5.
