Monument record 3537/2 - Iron Age double-ditched enclosure

Summary
Double ditched enclosure ditches and possible pit alignment on air photograph. The enclosure and surrounding features were excavated in 1990. The enclosure contained a number of pits. The organic-rich fills of the outer ditch were extensively sampled.

Full Description
{2} Enclosures, Ditches and Pit Alignment (SP 88676350), in the W. of the parish, on gravel at 44m above OD. Air photographs show a double- ditched rectangular enclosure with a third, intermediate ditch on the
N.E. side and a well-marked inner ditch. To the N.W. traces of short length of ditched trackway are visible. Immediately N.E. of the enclosure there is a group of conjoining rectangular enclosures on either side of a linear ditch, the whole bisected by a possible pit alignment (not shown on Fig. 159) which is very indistinct on all available air photographs.

{6} As a result of previous trial excavation on a series of Iron Age sites, which had highlighted the presence of waterlogged deposits containing environmental remains, controlled archaeological excavation and a wider watching brief were undertaken for Pioneer Aggregates (UK) Ltd in part of their Wollaston gravel pit. Early forms of land-division were denoted by boundary ditches and a pit-alignment but the major feature was a double-ditched enclosure of c 0.6ha containing pits and other features indicative of occupation. The richly organic, peat-like fill of its outer ditch was extensively sampled for scientific study by Leicester University; plan of site;
