Full Description

{1} Modern quarrying may have encroached slightly on sequence of possible early Iron Age enclosures; their individual boundaries were revealed in Trenches 3 & 4; any internal features & associated stratification had been truncated by prolonged cultivation. An enclosure with a double ditch. Also possible postholes indicate that truncated remains of related features might also survive. This enclosure conjoins with another enclosure. Parts have been quarried away in the 1920's. No dating evidence.

{2} Extra mural activity to west of Roman town: evaluation directed by B Dix.

{3} Three sides of rectangular enclosure visible; appended subrectangular feature may be agricultural in origin.

{4} Possible undated enclosure (Morphed Aerial Archaeology Interpretation). Crop/soilmark: Poor quality photography.

{5} On the south side of the development area on an area of roughly level ground on the valley side were the remains of a large sub-square or sub-rectangular enclosure. Its southern side was probably destroyed by C19th ironstone quarrying. The enclosure measured at least 45m x 42m, with a broad 15m wide entrance on the north-east side. The lack of internal features makes its purpose uncertain.
