Abstract/Summary

The site of the Roman town at Irchester is of national importance, recognised as such by its status as a scheduled ancient monument. The protected area extends around the previously fortified core to include the environs of cemeteries and other extra-mural activities. The western part of this area, together with other land extending beyond towards Wellingborough is currently being considered for development. In consequence, an archaeological evaluation has been undertaken for Whitworths Holdings Limited in order to provide information upon the extent, state of preservation and importance of any archaeological remains in the affected area. Fieldwork, involving non-destructive methods of investigation in addition to the excavation of trial trenches, was carried out between October 1990 and March 1991 by the Contracts Section of the Northamptonshire Archaeology Unit. The principle results are summarised as follows, in the order of the series of arable fields which extends from the west side of the Romano walled town in Borough Close towards Messrs Whitworths Victoria Mills. The area is formed by sloping ground generally falling from south to north towards the floodplain of the River Nene. In addition Field 1 dips around a dry valley or slade which extends along most of its length. The geology of the three fields is made up of ironstone, clays and silts with alluvium to the north.
