Full Description

{1} Modern quarrying may have encroached slightly on sequence of possible early Iron Age enclosures; their individual boundaries were revealed in Trenches 3 & 4; any internal features & associated stratification had been truncated by prolonged cultivation. Enclosure had a substantial ditch 2.8m wide and 1.45m deep. Its sides dipped at about 55 degrees from horizontal before dropping more sharply to a narrow base. The feature was largely backfilled with materials similar to those to those to be expected from its original excavation, thereby perhaps denoting the levelling out of an adjacent bank. Ditch probably recut. Although the main ditch cut earlier features along its outer edge there was no evidence of other archaeological features within the interior of the enclosure. This enclosure is conjoined to another-but both are now incomplete.

{2}Extra mural activity to west of Roman town: evaluation directed by B Dix.
