Full Description
{3} At the north end of the village (SP70984574 to 71054592) the line of Careys Road is continued north-eastwards as a pronounced hollow way up to 3m deep. This hollow way forks at SP71084585, one branch curving south-east and then south to meet the north end of Lower Street. The other branch runs north-north-west to the stream. Beyond the stream its line is continued as a terraceway, much damaged by ploughing. All these routes were shown as roads on the maps of 1728 and 1820.
{4} NCCAP:SP7145/003-4.
{5} The whole parish was surveyed for medieval fields. At Pury End are fine examples of sunken roads.
{6} Well preserved earthworks of hollow ways survive between Fields C, D and E. The northernmost stretch between Fields C and E is particularly prominent with steep bramble and scrub covered sides. The base is subject to stock trample with rabbit burrowing of the sides.
{7} A remarkable pair of furlongs, the one almost completely enveloping the other. This is a rare arrangement, and rather inconvenient for ploughing. The implication is that the loop road which surrounds the furlongs must have been set out before them.
