Full Description
{2}A major concentration in 1989 fieldwalking of early to middle saxon, late saxon at the southern end of field 2. Magnetometer interpreted as oval enclosure. Trial trenches found ditch of enclosure. Ditches, pits, postholes and slots of Saxon, medieval and post-medieval date were revealed. Oval enclosure appears to be of Saxon date.
{3}Middle to late Iron Age enclosures, Roman settlement, Saxon, Medieval and Post Medieval settlement, evaluation by M Shaw.
{4} A large open-ended oval ditched enclosure over 100m across and provisionally dated to Early-Middle Saxon period. Few features from this period recovered from within the enclosure and it may have been used as a stock enclosure rather than enclosing a high-status building. The entrance to the enclosure was shown to have been blocked by a later ditch.
{5} A large open ended oval ditched enclosure which measured over 100m in diameter. The enclosure ditch had an average depth of 1.3m. It appeared to be of Early to Middle Saxon date. Few contemporary features were located in the interior, and is likely that it was a stock enclosure (this replaces an earlier suggestion that the ditch originally enclosed a high status building). The wide open end of the enclosure was later closed off by a straight ditch.
National Mapping Programme interpreted as Iron Age
