Full Description

{1} NCCAP:SP5470/003+6-7.

{2} Settlement remains, formerly part of Barby village, lay immediately south of the site of the manor house and north of Ware Road. The area has been completely built over, but air photos showed a number of rectangular embanked closes along Ware Road, with a hollow way between them linking the road with the manor house site. A quantity of medieval pottery, mainly of the C13th, has been found in the garden of a house here. The area was devoid of buildings by 1779.

{3} To the east of the castle, pits were dug possibly for clay but apart from these and the unverified presence of internal boundaries this area was subject to little medieval use. Recent ground disturbances have served to create some additional earthworks within this latter area.
