Monument record 9442 - Open Field System, Yelvertoft

{1} The common fields of the parish were enclosed by an Act of Parliament of 1776; no Enclosure Map survives. Ridge and furrow of these fields exists on the ground or can be traced on air photos over most of the parish so that the pattern is almost recoverable. It is arranged in end-on or interlocked furlongs, many of reversed-S form. Among the minor details of the medieval landscape are trackways leading through the field from Yelvertoft to Elkington (eg SP608757).

{3} The majority of known heritage assets in the study area are ridge and furrow earthworks of medieval date; the proposed development area is likely to have been part of these common fields in the medieval period. The common fields of Yelvertoft were enclosed by Act of Parliament in 1776, no map survives.
