Full Description
{1} Gasworks. Shirley Road. The first gasworks in the town was established in 1864 on the corner of Duck Street and Church Street, but in 1892 a new gasworks was established to the north of the town on Shirley Road.
Gas holders were present on the site from this date until 1968 when North Sea Gas was introduced to the town. Two gas engines were housed in a building on the site. The buildings fronting on to Shirley Road are still in existence, but the larger structures behind have been demolished and the land is out of use. Film 16, photo 6-7
{2} The Gas Managers House/Office is the only remaining visible structure.
