Full Description
{1} 1.5 miles long x 60ft deep cutting was dug through limestone on clay to carry the London and Birmingham Railway in 1838. It was deepened and widened in 1875 to take the extra tracks for the Northampton Loop. The latter had to be strengthened with 'grid iron' girders after a landslip in 1891.
{2} Roade Cutting, one and a half miles long and seventy feet deep, was the final section completed of the London and Birmingham Railway, opened in 1838, and described at the time as "the greatest civil engineering work so far in British history".
