Full Description

{1} Trench 13 contained two linear ditches and a possible third. Ditches [1305] and [1311] were aligned north to south, but curved eastwards. The former was 0.62m wide x 0.11m deep with a wide U-shaped profile. It contained a lense of burnt material at the top of the fill. A small sherd of late Iron Age or early Roman date was also recovered from the fill. The latter ditch [1311] was 0.4m wide x 0.18m deep with a V-shaped profile. The third feature was too fragmentary for proper interpretation, but may have formed an additional small ditch aligned parallel to and between the other two ditches.
The ditches revealed probably form part of a series of Iron Age/Romano-British field systems identified from cropmarks to the east and west of the proposed road corridor.
