{1} A cobbled surface of tightly packed limestone fragments of mixed character. The cobbles overlay a layer of redepostied natural limestone. The surface was patched in places and the thickness of the road metalling was not uniform.
{2}Beneath the modern hardcore and a 19th century 0.3m layer was a metalled surface of small limestone pieces bedded upon larger limestone blocks 5/5 which in turn overlay the natural clay.
{3} A draft inclosure map of 1830 marks Pond Close and Castle Lane although the latter has been narrowed by the creation of a series of enclosues along its northern side.
