Full Description

{1} Essentially a single storey building with only four rooms on the first floor. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings around the doorways and above and below the windows, with occasional use around the principal windows. Many of the windows have gauged rubbed brick lintels. The roof is of red tile, though this appears to be secondary, especially as the documentary sources indicate that it was slated and that there were problems with the quality of this covering. Nearly all of the windows are original wooden sash or swing windows, though there are some modern PVC replacements, principally in two ground floor offices and in the western of the upstairs rooms. There is a large lead covered cupola in the centre of the central hall roof topped by a weather vane. Each of the entrances was fitted with a wrought iron boot scraper set partly into the wall and partly the York stone steps. The walls have a pitch and slate damp proof course. This is the largest building on the site and comprises a long block arranged symmetrically around a central hall. Each half is essentially identical though there is no indication as to which half was for the boys or girls. Each side of the building is served by two entrances, probably one on each side for pupils and teachers. [More…]
