Full Description

{5} The Deer Shelter stands in the Park to the north-west of Stanford Hall. It is a single volume constructed of brick walls (Flemish Garden Wall bond) with a hipped roof now of corrugated iron, although originally thatched. The south elevation has a wide opening, originally occupied by oak gates to control deer access. There is a small high-level vent with an oak frame in each of the east and west walls. Much of the original brisk floor survives, along with two low level brick mangers, topped by timber boughs.
The building is a C19th construction and is shown in the background of a late C19th painting in the possession of Lady Braye. It was a picturesque example of its type, set in the park and a short walk from the Hall.
The building is in a neglected state. The iron roofing has rusted and failed along lengths of the eaves, allowing access by water, which has decayed the timber wall plate and some of the rafters.
