Full Description

{1} Late C17th/early C18th park & formal landscape.

{6} In 1737 - Sir Thomas Cave "added a large pile of building, consisting of two quadrangles, and containing all kinds of convenient offices requisite to a country seat, and made many alterations, and additions of a kitchen-garden, plantations, water etc in the park" (from the notes of Sir Thomas Cave).

{7} The park was largely laid out in the late 17th and 18th centuries. It covers an area of 163ha.

{8} Sir Thomas Cave had inherited the estate in 1734 from his brother Sir Verney (4th Baronet). He constructed a new stable block begun in 1737 and updated the east elevation of the Hall to form an entrance court. In the park he was responsible for thinning some of the formal avenues, creating the Serpentine to the west c.1746 and forming the lake by damming the River Avon. As part of the extensive improvements to form the lake, it is probable that the Cascade Bridge was constructed with the cascade c.1740. The ‘new bridge’ is referred to in 1747, when repairs to flood gates are recorded in labourers’ accounts.
