Full Description

{1} The earliest feature exposed was what may have been the fill of a pit. It was not excavated. A possible timber slot cut this pit. The slot was a rectilinear cut 0.84m wide with steep, almost vertical sides and a flat base. This was seen on the north west edge of the mound but it is not known whether it continued around the other faces. Parallel to the slot was a compact mass of stones which may have acted as a revetment wall. The jumbled nature of the rocks is not indicative of a defensive purpose. A dark grey loam with limestone inclusions lay over the deposits, possibly representing a destruction layer.
