SNN106479 - An Archaeological Investigation at The Mount, Alderton, Northamptonshire

Archaeological survey and excavation carried out between 27th - 29th July 2000. Seven trenches were excavated in total: one across the moat, one over the rampart and a third within the interior. A fourth trench was opened in the west across a gap in the rampart where the entrance was thought to be. Three further trenches were opened in the garden of Magnolia Cottage. The moat was revealed to be 2.5m deep and 10.15m wide and may have been deeper; however excavation was stopped for safety reasons. Deposits within the cut were sampled for environmental evidence and waterlogged wood from the base of the ditch was radiocarbon dated. The C14 sample gave a date of AD1020-1270, not an Iron Age date as expected.
