Roman ditches and the corner of a limestone wall were observed in a pipeline trench

Full Description

{1} The corner of a limestone wall four courses high was seen in a trench. Romano-British pottery (colour coated and gritted wares) was recovered from 3ft below the ground surface. A dressed limestone block was also found on the spoil heap. A scatter of stone roofing tiles, nails and pottery dating from the Roman period to the C18th) was observed when the trench was filled in. Fieldworkers: D.Jackson & J.Palmer.

{2}Field 44; Roman sherds, including mortaria, colour coated wares, greyware dishes and jars and shelly channel-rim cooking pots, were found, as well as stone roofing tiles and ashlar blocks. Some medieval sherds were also recorded.

{3} In 1966 a pipeline trench revealed the corner of a stone-walled building associated with Roman pottery and stone roof tiles.

{4} In 1966 a trench dug for a gas pipe line revealed at SP888657 the corner of a Limestone wall and RB pottery (colour coated and gritted wares) 3ft below the surface.

{5} In 1966 a pipeline trench revealed the corner of a stone-walled building associated with Roman pottery and stone roof tiles (Mon 3836/0/1). Subsequently another pipeline to the south, along the parish boundary with Great Doddington, revealed at least five ditches, all containing Roman pottery. Info: P.Foster.

{6} Mrs Traxton, secretary of the Wellingborough and District Arch Soc (who retain the material) confirmed the above indicated site and said that no further finds have been recorded.

There is no evidence of former occupation at this site which is now under crop.
