Full Description

{1} A major late Saxon royal manor, the centre of a large estate covering several Hundreds existed at Finedon. It is thought to have been associated with the middle Saxon royal 'burh' at Irthlingborough. (The initial function of Finedon may have been as the meeting place of that estate, the meaning of the name being the meeting place of the 'thing' or moot. The late Saxon and medieval royal manor of Finedon have not been located but it seems likely that it will have existed somewhere in the area of the post medieval country house, close to the church. It is however probable that it lay in the area to the south west of the church, in the former parkland and grounds of the Hall. By the late 13th century the manor site had been abandoned. The 19th century Hall lies on the site of a 16th century manor but it is not clear whether this lay in the ‘bury yard’ apparently mentioned in 1423.
