Monument record 1933 - Finedon
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Finedon was a late Saxon royal estate centre which developed as a medieval market town or market village. The settlement may have been truncated in the 18th century by the emparking around the Hall, if not deserted at an earlier date. During the course of the 18th and 19th centuries, Finedon went through a process of industrialisation with the establishment of boot and shoe industries, ironstone quarrying and smelting industries.

Full Description
{1} Medieval borough of Finedon. In 1247 it was represented as a borough or vill by its own jury at The Eyre.
{2} Finedon was a late Saxon royal estate centre which developed as a medieval market town or market village. The settlement may have been truncated in the 18th century by the emparking around the Hall, if not deserted at an earlier date.
{3} Because of pre 19th century shrinkage and especially as a result of 19th century imparking the westernmost part of the medieval village is not built over. Although the earthworks in this area have been levelled by cultivation and the grounds of the Hall subject to substantial earthmoving in the landscaping, there is the potential for good archaeological survival in part of the area. The significant area includes the area around the churchyard, where there are mainly post medieval buildings. Any substantial disturbance in this area should be the subject of archaeological evaluation, when development or other threats arise, especially in order to identify whether significant remains of the royal Saxon manor. Such investigation may reveal further evidence for the plan form of the westernmost part of the village and may provide evidence as to the location of the market place. If so then significant evidence for the origins and development of the market may be forthcoming.
{10} Occupation sites (unlocated). Medieval pottery, roads, house platforms and wells have been noted in Finedon (relates to {11} below).
{11} Report by Gwen Brown that Finedon had been partly ploughed; tile, wattle and daub and C12 sherds have been recovered near a medieval road. The C17 Dower House platforms are still visible, but are in danger of being covered by spoil. Five wells have also been found. No NGR provided.
