Full Description

{1} The garden is bordered on the east, and partly on the north and south sides, by a wall of different phases, with ironstone piers at their ends. The north and south arms suggest that these acted as screen walls bordering the former drive. There is no evidence of buildings within the garden. The southern edge of the garden is screened from the house by a line of hedges. The garden is divided by paths, now overgrown.
None of the map evidence available indicates a walled garden associated with the Rectory, and the garden is not comparable with what are generally thought of as walled kitchen gardens. The walls here can be thought of as screening walls separating the Old Rectory from the road rather than as walls enclosing a kitchen garden.
The previous owner of the garden remembers his father laying out the space as a kitchen garden approx 40 years ago; before this it would seem that the area was simply part of the plot surrounding the Old Rectory.
