Monument record 478/0/8 - The Canal

{2} The Canal was in existence by 1741.

{4} A topographical survey was undertaken in 2025. An earthwork dam forms the eastern end of The Canal ornamental lake within the Fawsley Hall landscape. The feature was present by 1741 and is associated with the development of the designed parkland, later enhanced in the 1760s. Topographical survey recorded the northern part of the dam crossed by the proposed pipeline route. At the surveyed location the dam stood approximately 1.45m above the adjacent trackway. The dam functions as part of a wider ornamental lake and water-management system connecting The Canal, associated weirs and Big Waters. Nothing is known of the nature of construction of the dam.
