Monument record 1186 - Possible post medieval to modern quarrying and agricultural activity, north of Earls Barton Road
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Archaeological excavation identified a number of modern features, including quarrying and a linear gully. The gully and an adjacent spread of material probably related to an enclosure, and associated pond/structure, present on maps from the 1880s to the 1950s.

Full Description
{2} Archaeological mitigation identified a number of moren features. The pits are probably 19th/ 20th century limestone quarry pits. If this is the case then an adjacent spread of subsoil/ colluvium may be a spread of material to level this area of quarrying. There was a large irregularly shaped spread of silty clay containing 19th/ 20th century pottery. It was on average 0.05-0.15m thick but did thicken to 0.26m in the area of the trial trench.
The spread is in approx the right place to be related to the pond/ structure on the 1938-1952 and 1958
Gully is in the right position, and alignment, to be related to the enclosure depicted on maps from 1880-1952. The Roman coin found in the trial trench evaluation is therefore a residual find deposited within this larger spread of modern material.
