Full Description

{1} Archaeological evaluation, comprising the excavation of seven trial trenches, identified a north-south ditch that corresponds with a boundary depicted on a map of 1580 and which was still extant by the beginning of the 19th century, but filled in by the end of the century. An east-west boundary was depicted on the 1580 map, separating the rear of the tenements from the open fields beyond. The evaluation only found the remains of a plough furrow and may represent the remains of a fossilised headland. Further gullies, ditches and pits were also identified, some of which contained small quantities of medieval pottery. No evidence of quarrying, iron-working or substantial medieval or earlier habitation was recovered.
