Monument record 2258/1 - Possible Romano-British Ironworking

Summary
Fieldwalking survey identified a dark patch of soil from which a large quantity of iron nails and Roman pottery was found; also possible rubbish pit or wooden building. Subsequent metal detecting in this area has also recovered a significant number of metal objects, mostly dating to the Roman period.

Full Description
{1} Areas of Roman pottery and stone scatter occur over a zone about ¾ mile in length between Titchmarsh church and the River Nene. At TL014805 is a black patch about 20-30ft across. It produces many iron nails and a quantity of Roman pottery, including good quality material – Samian, barbotine decorated and painted pottery, grey coarse ware and mortaria fragments. Pieces of bronze, glass and clay with straw impressions are also found. A denarius of Julia Domna R: Matri Deum, RIC 566, AD 196-211, was also found.
