Full Description

{1} Areas of Roman pottery and stone scatter occur over a zone about ¾ mile in length between Titchmarsh church and the River Nene. The material lies on the slope of the hill to the north of the road which joins Titchmarsh to the A605, and on the north side of the track which runs from this road junction to the river. The greatest concentration of building stone is at TL014803. 200yds north of this at TL014805 is a black patch about 20-30ft across. It produces many iron nails and a quantity of Roman pottery, including good quality material – Samian, barbotine decorated and painted pottery, grey coarse ware and mortarium fragments. Pieces of bronze, glass and clay with straw impressions are also found. A denarius of Julia Domna R: Matri Deum, RIC 566, AD 196-211 was also found.

{2} Finds are centred approximately on TL016803. [HER note 14/05/2014: apparently the area was mapped, but map not found.]
