Full Description

{1} In the north-east of the site a small area 5.0m x 4.5m was exposed showing a densely distributed scatter of fragmented limestone and pottery, which was threatened by two of the footings.
Two scattered rubble stone walls were identified, both severely damaged. One was aligned north-est to south-west, 0.8m wide x surviving length of 1.8m. It comprised a limestone rubble core with occasional large rounded burnt stones. The other wall was similar in form and construction, and lay perpendicular to the first wall, 0.86m wide x surviving length of 2.3m where it had been cleaned. A single large slab lay at the north-west end of this cleaned section, part way along the length of buried wall. This may have been a threshold stone. The two walls appeared to form the rear corner of a possible building which may have faced directly onto the corner of Watling Street and Richmond Road, ie. eccentric to the frontage of either of these streets. The presence of calcareous ironstone coarseware and Potterspury ware dated the walls to around the mid C13th at latest.
The rubble spread was identified across the entire area, but within the arc of the two walls contained charcoal flecks, pieces of crushed shell and occasional limestone fragments, appearing to represent an abandonment deposit. Pottery from this deposit also dated to the mid C13th, so it is possible that the walls were actually built earlier.
