Full Description
{1} Deposits close to the frontage were remarkably undisturbed. With the exception of a Victorian pit which cut through the cobbled surface, the medieval deposits were in situ. A sequence of structural elements was defined, including a single posthole, possibly associated with the late medieval cobbled surface. Sealed beneath the latter and cutting natural were two stakeholes. It is unclear whether these features were internal or external to medieval habitation. The quantity of medieval pottery here far outweighed that from other test pits, providing the strongest evidence for buildings set along the main road, close to the plot fronts. The absence of early material supports expansion of the village southwards some time after 1250, as testified by the presence of Potterspury wares.
