Full Description

{1} Archaeological evaluation comprising two trenches. Trench 1 revealed two small patches of stone paving pressed into the top of natural clay and sealed by medieval or later cultivation of the site. These probably relate to the paving found within Trench 2.
Trench 2 revealed two rough stone-paved layers as well as several pits and scoops of uncertain date, though none contained anything other than medieval pottery.
The two stone layers appear to be the remnants of yard or path surfaces, the lower one being of medieval date, and the upper layer could also be medieval. The mixed layers below, between and above the stone surfaces may be the result of agricultural activities, suggesting that part of the tenement was intermittently cultivated during the medieval and earlier post medieval periods.
Almost all the pottery sherds found during the evaluation are small and abraded and despite the presence of several wasters it is most likely that they were general refuse which had been spread during manuring of a cultivated area of the tenement.
Approximately 200 sherds of medieval pottery were recovered, predominately of Lyveden/Stanion B Ware (CTS 320) – 1225-1400AD, including several wasters.
