Full Description

{1}The stable, barns and passage are a mix of earlier coursed stone walls and later brick partitions. The east wall of the passage is of brick in two skins with a chimney on the eastern side facing into the farmhouse. The south facing wall of the stable is also of brick, indicating that the room was formerly open-fronted to the south. The southern extent of the western stone wall of the stable has been edged in brick to match. The roofs are of slate though over the barn the roof has been replaced with corrugated sheets. Local residents have related that the recorded buildings were formerly part of a butcher’s shop (pers comm. 11/05/2015). The Helmdon Trail dates the butcher business as having been ‘flourishing’ in the 1930s. The passage had additional beams across the roof space with an iron frame with hooks attached. This may have been the area where the carcasses were prepared.
