Monument record 3884/0/37 - Probable 17th century buildings and 19th century quarrying, Gold Street

Stone foundations were identified during archaeological investigations on the Gold Street frontage. 19th century quarrying had truncated any remains to the rear of the frontage

{1} Trial trench evaluation was undertaken in the former car park associated with the Fox and Hounds pub. In the trench closest to the frontage, the stone foundations of a building were observed. Although there was no dating evidence, it was assumed that they related to the frontage buildings depicted on the 1803 survey of the town {2}. Quarry pits dating to the 19th century extended almost to the rear of the building, truncating any earlier archaeological remains to the rear of the frontage.

{3} Archaeological observation undertaken during the development of the site identified a further probable stone building foundation in the north-east corner.
