Full Description

{1} Geophysical survey undertaken in 2012 located a number of positive anomalies of possible archaeological origin, most of which may represent pits.

Subsequent trial trench excavation identified positive results only in one trench, where a number of possible large pits that may date to the mid-late Iron Age were identified although flooding limited full characterisation. The features contained high concentrations of limestone including one that had laid slabs of limestone. Further trenches contained fluvial and alluvial deposits and it was clear extensive fluvial re-working had occurred within this part of the site in the past. Abraded Iron Age pottery was recovered from some of the deposits and a large pit also contained Iron Age pottery. It seems unlikely that the flood plain was suitable for settlement, so seems likely that the pits could represent specialised activities taking place near the river.
A fragment of Roman tile and some iron fittings that may originally come from a building were also found in a former stream bed.
