Full Description

{2} Archaeological evaluation undertaken in 2017 identified a single undated gully on the east side of the railway to the east of Lodge Farm. It is likely to be for field drainage. In form, it is similar to gullies to the south and may be part of a Roman field system.

{3} Further trial trench excavation identified further ditches to the west, probably an extension of the field system. Very little pottery was recovered apart from a few sherds of early Roman wares. A stone surface, fire pit and three pits were also identified.

{4} - Excavations in 2020-21 identified activity that can be dated to the transitional period of Iron Age to Roman. The droveway was identified, of which extends through most of the excavation areas in a north-south alignment. Also, there are three enclosures that are partially excavated due to these extending into the limits of the two excavation areas. The transitional period features were abandoned in the Roman period and only one feature was identified to this date, which was a series of elongated pits.
