SNN112760 - Archaeological Trial Trench Evaluation on land between Courteenhall, Blisworth and Milton Malsor, Northamptonshire May-July 2020

MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) was commissioned by RPS Consulting Ltd on behalf of Segro to undertake archaeological trial trench evaluation, on land to the south-west of the M1 between Courteenhall, Blisworth and Milton Malsor, Northamptonshire, henceforth, Segro Logistics Park. The site has been subject to previous phases of geophysical survey and consequent trial trench evaluation. This phase of works consisted of the excavation of a total of 309 trenches which targeted areas that had not been subject to previous investigation. The trial trench evaluation broadly corroborated the results of previous works, as the areas of archaeological activity were largely concentrated in the vicinity of previously identified Iron Age and Roman activity. This evaluation enabled the full extent of such activity to be established to further inform the consequent phase of mitigation works currently underway across the development area. The archaeological remains largely comprised Iron Age and Roman ditches, pits and two potential kilns. Two medieval ditches were also noted in the south of the area. The remnants of furrows were present in 119 of the trenches. Post-medieval and modern landscaping and waste disposal was also noted across the site.
