Full Description

{1} Owners from c.1863 Butlin, Bevan & Co.Ltd., from 27.06.1889 Thomas Butlin & Co.Ltd and from April 1920 United Steel Cos.Ltd., until closure in 1925. The first quarrying area east of the Wellingborough to Irthlingborough road seems to be an extension of the Dean & Chapter site. The remainder of the quarries seem to move north and east from the original site first around Irthlingborough Grange and then finally ending up at South View Farm. The tramways known to be on the site led directly to the Wellingborough Iron Works. It is thought that a tramway existed from the top of the original quarry to the area near South View Farm but there are no markings of it left. Quarrying stopped about the time of the closure of the ironworks in 1925.

[HER note 01/12/2014: Tonks shows the quarry pits to be more extensive than plotted by the HER, as taken from G.Foard's mapping.]
