Abstract/Summary

MOLA was commissioned to undertake a geophysical survey of c70ha of land to the east of Wellingborough, ahead of the proposed Stanton Cross development scheme. The survey covered two irregular parcels of land, extending from north of Finedon Road to south of Irthlingborough Grange. Two extensive sets of archaeological remains were identified, each appearing to be broadly late prehistoric to Roman in date, with various enclosures and other occupation features present. A Roman road was traced intermittently over more than a mile, and elsewhere there were a number of linear ditches and two pit alignments. The survey also mapped parts of several backfilled quarries and former tramways associated with the late 19th to early 20th century ironstone industry. A large palaeochannel, perhaps Pleistocene in date, was also present.
