Full Description
{1} Archaeological trial trench excavation identified an Iron Age ditch and an early/middle Saxon gully. The ditch was probably a boundary and contained pottery broadly dated to the Iron Age, a large unretouched flint flake and a small quantity of animal including fragments of roe deer antler. The gully contained two sherds of Saxon pottery dating to the 5th-7th centuries. The remains of two post-medieval cottages were found on the western edge of the site and the south-western part of the had suffered from extensive disturbance.
{2} Archaeological excavation identified the Iron Age ditch found in the evaluation and recovered early Iron Age pottery from it. The early Medieval activity comprises a rectilinear enclosure that is formed from interconncting gullies. Two of the gullies contained pottery that dates from the 5th to 9th century AD. The medieval activty comprised one sub-rectangular pit. The post-medieval period is represented by a pits and a stone cottage. Late 17th century pottery was found in the outer walls. The internal floors and partitions all appear to be considerably later and are likely of 19th century origin with a 20th century tiled halfway floor.
